As The Voice of Maine Business, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the Maine Human Resources Library. We hope it will help you operate your business more efficiently and avoid the hidden pitfalls that lurk among the maze known as HR.

Targeted, timely, and comprehensive, this manual is considered the cornerstone guide of the compliance library. It covers more than 30 primary topics directly related to the employment process, from job descriptions through termination and beyond. Each includes practical advice on what should be done, solid advice on how to do it, and a complete explanation of why it is important.

 

This Maine Human Resources Library was not written as a response to employee-related problems, but to help you avoid them. The guidelines and checklists will make that easier, and the examples and step-by-step instructions will give you the confidence to know that you are on solid ground.

 

This manual is part of a series of publications prepared exclusively for Maine employers and made available by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce in a continuing effort to provide reliable and practical information for our members and the Maine business community.

Heidi Nunn-Gilman

    HEIDI NUNN-GILMAN is an attorney with The Cavanagh Law Firm in Phoenix, Arizona. Ms. Nunn-Gilman's practice focuses on employment litigation and human resource matters. She has experience in working with both public and private employers. She advises clients on matters relating to labor and employment law, including I-9 and immigration compliance strategies, E-Verify, ICE and worksite enforcement, Title VII, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, affirmative action, leaves, drug and alcohol, NLRB, wrongful discharge, non-competition and confidentiality agreements, wage and hour laws for both public and private employers, employee handbooks, and executive agreements. Ms. Nunn-Gilman is a frequent speaker on a number of employment law topics, including I-9 and immigration compliance strategies and wage and hour compliance. Ms. Nunn-Gilman received her J.D., summa cum laude, from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon in 2005, where she graduated first in her class, was on the Trustee's Fellowship Scholar List, and was a member of the Cornelius Honor Society. While at Lewis & Clark, she served as Editor in Chief of the Lewis & Clark Law Review. Ms. Nunn-Gilman earned an M.A. in Philosophy, Teaching Ethics Emphasis, summa cum laude, from the University of Montana in 2000. She earned a B.A. degree in political science, history and philosophy, summa cum laude, from Ouachita Baptist University in 1998.

John F. Lambert, Jr.

    John is principally a trial lawyer whose practice over thirty years has included a wide variety of trial and administrative work, including employment benefits and discrimination litigation, complex corporate litigation, majority-minority shareholder disputes, and probate/estate-related litigation. Jonathan Shapiro

    Jonathan Shapiro is the managing partner of the New England office and a partner in the Boston office. He practices in all aspects of employment, labor and employee benefits law and litigation on behalf of management. He has represented management before state and federal courts throughout the country on a variety of labor and employment issues, including the defense of wrongful termination and discrimination actions. Jonathan regularly counsels employers nationally on a broad range of business and employment matters, including designing and implementing personnel policies and practices, overseeing the hiring and termination of employees, negotiating severance packages for senior executives, conducting internal corporate audits and investigations, and safeguarding and enforcing restrictions regarding corporate property and information.
